| PRIVATELY SPONSORED STUDENTS PROGRAMME (PSSP) |
The Privately Sponsored Students Programme (PSSP) was launched in October 1998. The programme aims at providing an opportunity for Secondary School graduates who obtained the minimum grade of C+ at the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) but are not admitted by the Joint Admissions Board (JAB) because of the limited capacities in the public universities. Many students are left out because the universities admit from B plain and above. The attendant effect of this is that about eight thousand to ten thousand students are offered admission while about fourty thousand students are left.
Recognizing education as a basic human right and aware of its mission to impart knowledge, skills and to generate knowledge, Senate saw the need to open opportunities for those students who qualified but could not get admitted to the Universities.
PSSP is an educational service by Moi University through which any Kenyan is now able to pursue University education at an affordable rate compared to the cost of similar studies abroad.
The income from the programme contributes to improvement of the academic environment of the University through research funds, construction of buildings, purchase of equipment, library books, vehicles and other areas of the University.
The programme has helped the country save a lot of money in form of foreign currency. For instance in 1999 alone, about twenty thousand Kenyans had enrolled in foreign Universities thus denying the country about Kshs.15 billion in foreign earnings each year.
Currently, there are about 3,800 students enrolled in PSSP from almost all the Schools in the University.
Programme Coordinating Unit
Privately sponsored students programmes are co-ordinated through the programmes offices located at Eldoret West Campus.
Students Welfare
The office of the Dean of Students caters for the non-academic aspects of student's life, in particular relating to students welfare and discipline. The office is responsible for the promotion of sports, health, cultural and recreational pursuits and interaction among the students and between students of the University and those of other institutions.
Examinations
Privately sponsored students sit the same examination as the government sponsored students. Common University regulations are applied in processing of the examination.
