SCHOOL OF AGRICULTURE AND BIOTECHNOLOGY
|
| Department of Biotechnology - Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Biotechnology |
Biotechnology is becoming increasingly important in agricultural production and development globally. The Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Biotechnology (B.Sc. Agric. Biotech) degree programme is offered in the School of Agriculture and Biotechnology and is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the principles and practices of agricultural biotechnology. The goal of the programme is therefore to provide theoretical and practical comprehensive training and to prepare for application of the acquired knowledge. This is achieved through course work, field and laboratory training, seminars, visits and attachments.
- To apply skills acquired in biotechnological techniques.
- To conduct basic and applied research in agricultural biotechnology.
- To make use of acquired practical and theoretical knowledge for postgraduate studies.
- To provide policy guidelines on the roles and limitations of agricultural biotechnology in national development.
- To apply marker technology in crop and animal improvement, and in germplasm conservation.
The programme is composed of coursework, practicums and a field attachment element. The coursework is designed such that it contains the relevant inter-disciplinary courses in basic sciences and human resources development as well as the foundation and in-depth courses in agricultural biotechnology. The practicums enable the students to acquire practical training in various aspects of agricultural biotechnology. The attachment period, which is twelve (12) weeks long, is intended to give the students hands-on experience of the practice in agricultural biotechnology. Additionally, the student will be expected to take at least one elective course in the third and fourth year of study.
