| Department of Seed, Crop and Horticulture Sciences - Bachelor of Science in Horticultural Science and Management |
Horticulture is one of the leading agricultural sub sectors for provision of income, food and employment in Kenya. The main emphasis is directed on flowers, fruits and vegetables. Presently, landscape gardening and design is also attracting considerable interest. The need to strengthen the horticultural sector has created demand for well-trained and competent manpower. The Horticultural Science and Management programme is offered in the Department of Seed, Crop and Horticultural Sciences. The goal of the programme is to provide advanced theoretical and practical training in the various disciplines of horticulture, namely floriculture, pomology, olericulture and their management. The programme emphasizes hands-on practical application of the theoretical knowledge. This is achieved through extensive course work, farm and laboratory training, seminars and field attachment.
- To apply principles of horticultural science and sustainable business management.
- To provide extension service in production, handling, marketing and processing of horticultural crops.
- To conduct basic applied research in various disciplines of horticulture and management.
- To carry out business, farming, processing and extension work in horticulture
- To make use of acquired practical and theoretical knowledge for postgraduate studies.
- To acquire skills in production, handling, marketing and processing of horticultural produce.
- To provide policy guidelines on roles of horticulture and management in national development
The programme is composed of course work, practicum and a field attachment element. The first year of study concentrates mainly on the inter-disciplinary courses in Basic Sciences and Human Resources Development. During the second year of study the focus is on foundation courses in the various disciplines of Horticultural Science and Management. The third and fourth years of study are dedicated mainly to in-depth specialist training in floriculture, pomology, olericulture and management. In addition, one field attachment period of eight (8) weeks is offered between the third and the fourth years of study.
