| Department of Seed, Crop and Horticulture Sciences - Bachelor of Science in Seed Science and Technology |
Seed as a living entity is an important component in agricultural production and development. Good quality seed coupled with proper production management enhances increased yields and hence food security for any nation. The goal of the programme is therefore to provide theoretical and practical comprehensive training and the application of the acquired knowledge. This is achieved through coursework, field and laboratory training, seminars, visits and attachments.
- To apply acquired skills in production, processing, storage and marketing of seed.
- To carry out business in seed sector
- To provide extension services in production, processing and marketing of seed.
- To conduct basic and applied research in seed science and technology
- To make use of acquired practical and theoretical knowledge for postgraduate studies.
- To provide policy guidelines in the roles and limitations of seed science and technology in national development.
The programme is composed of coursework, practicum and a laboratory attachment. The coursework is designed such that it contains the relevant inter-disciplinary courses in basic sciences and human resources development as well as the foundation and in-depth courses in seed science and technology. The practicum enables the students to acquire practical training in various aspects of seed science and technology. The attachment period, which is twelve (12) weeks long, is intended to give the student experience of the practice in seed science and technology. Additionally, the student will be expected to take at least one elective course in the third and fourth years of study.
