Department of Seed, Crop and Horticulture Sciences - Master of Philosophy in Agronomy

Introduction

Agriculture is the backbone of Kenya's economy. The M.Phil in Agronomy programme emphasizes in-depth knowledge required for production, processing and marketing of field crops. The programme is therefore designed to enable students to acquire the technical skills needed in promoting agriculture.

Objectives

The general objective of the programme is to produce through training skilled manpower in the theoretical, practical and research aspects of Agronomy. The graduates should be attractive to employers and have career opportunities in line with their training.

It is expected that graduates from the programme would have competence that will enable them fulfill the following specific objectives:

  1. Carry out research in Agronomy.
  2. Make use of the acquired knowledge and practical skills for further postgraduate studies.
  3. Successfully run private businesses in Agronomy.
  4. Participate in the implementation of Agronomy programmes as advisors, administrators, extension specialists or trainers.

Design of the Programme

The programme shall normally be by course work, examination and thesis. There shall be at least one supervisor from Moi University for each student. External supervision may be required for students conducting research outside the campus with independent organizations, on approval by Moi University Senate.
