SCHOOL OF AGRICULTURE AND BIOTECHNOLOGY

Department of Soil Science - Master of Philosophy in General Soil Science

Introduction

The soil science programme in the School of Agriculture and Biotechnology is designed to emphasize the understanding of the properties, use and management of soils of the tropics and subtropics with special attention to arid and semi-arid lands, which account for about two-thirds of the total land area in Kenya. These areas of emphasis make the soil science programme offered by the School of Agriculture and Biotechnology to be unique from others offered in Kenya.

Graduates of the programme may obtain employment as teachers at University and other institutions, researchers at experimental stations, subject matter specialists in extension services, project managers in the implementation of multi-disciplinary or interdisciplinary projects and policy advisors in specialized areas.

Objectives

  1. The programme is intended to train high level manpower with conceptual and practical skills to be used in the advancement of the understanding, conservation and sustainability of the soil through research and training.
  2. To conduct research in specialized areas and,
    • Perceive the importance of soil as a major component of the ecosystem, and as a natural resource base for providing food, shelter, roads, etc.
    • Understand the characteristics of the soil and how they can be manipulated to conserve and sustain productivity.
  3. Design and conduct basic and applied research geared towards the enhancement of the understanding of the soil system and how it can be better managed in different ecological zones.
  4. Participate in multidisciplinary studies geared towards food and fuel production and environmental awareness.
  5. Teach theoretical and practical skills of soil science in secondary and tertiary institutions.

Design of the Programme

The Master of Philosophy Programme shall be by course work and Thesis.
