Department of Family and Consumer Sciences - Master of Philosophy in Home Science & Technology

Introduction

The mission of home science and technology is cantered around the well being of families and individuals in the society. Home science education in schools focuses on those areas of life, which constitute day to day activities. The aim is to develop a basic set of knowledge, skills, and attitudes, which a student can apply to the material, and human complexities of living in a diverse and evolving setting. Well-being is connected to the achievement of social, emotional, physical, and intellectual needs as well as the basic necessities of food, clothing, and shelter. Home science education contributes to the development of independence, interdependence, and the empowerment of individuals and families thus enabling them to become more active and informed members of society.

The structure and nature of the African home and family have changed throughout the 20th century. Economic, political, socio-cultural, technological, legal, and ethical changes have affected and continue to affect all aspects of life in Kenya today.

Home science curriculum in the schools has been influenced over the years by the changing role of women in families and society, changes in family structure, by economics changes, and by the advances in natural and social sciences. The school curricula need to accommodate these changes. Hence this programme (Master of Philosophy in Home Science Education & Technology) is a response to the challenge that spells out the need to envision new ways of addressing the current and emerging needs of students and society in the area of home science education and technology in Kenya.
