Department of Seed, Crop and Horticulture Sciences - Master of Philosophy in Plant Breeding

Introduction

Plant breeding contributes to increased crop production throughout the world. Examples of crops that have seen considerable yield increases are maize, rice and wheat, all crops of importance in Kenya and in particular in the Rift Valley Province.

Objectives

The general objective of the programme is to produce through training skilled manpower in the theoretical, practical and research aspects of Plant Breeding. The graduates should be attractive to employers and have career opportunities in line with their training.

It is expected that graduates from the programme would have competence that will enable them fulfill the following specific objectives:

  1. Carry out research in Plant Breeding.
  2. Make use of the acquired knowledge and practical skills for further postgraduate studies.
  3. Successfully run private businesses in Plant Breeding.
  4. Participate in the implementation of Plant Breeding programmes as advisors, administrators, extension specialists or trainers.

Design of the Programme
