(B.Sc ARE)

Introduction

The main emphasis of the programme inter alia should include Agriculture, Farm Management, Resource Economics, Marketing, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Agricultural Extension and Practical Work. The original program pragmatic and subject to change, consistent with changing circumstances and emphasis in the farming industry. The curriculum produces practically oriented graduates who are competent and sensitive to address issues related to increased small farm productivity and development.

They should also be able to participate in the agricultural industry in a variety of roles notably self-employment where feasible, agricultural extension and credit administration, agricultural project planning and implementation, marketing consultancy, natural resources management and the teaching of agricultural economics.

 

Justification


In many developing countries agriculture is carried out on small farms with inherent differences in agro-ecological conditions, a limited resource base and basic technology. Agriculture is also the principal sub-sector in the economies of many developing countries in the absence of a strong industrial sector. Indeed in Kenya, agriculture in its widest sense is ‘the goose that lays golden eggs’. It is a source of income to farmers and affiliated entrepreneurs, a source of employment and an important source of foreign exchange to the nation among many other benefits.

The training program for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Economics and resource management is conceptualized and designed to produce manpower that is expected to contribute towards the goal of self reliance and motivation in skilled manpower for national development especially for the agricultural sub-sector. Its principal objective is to produce graduates trained in the disciplines of agriculture, economics and resource management having a good blending of theory and practical work and can effectively promote agricultural development and contribute towards enhancing the standards of living of Kenyans.

At the completion of the training, the B.Sc. Agricultural Economics graduates should be able to:

  1. Analyze and explain the physical, ecological and agricultural policy of Kenya and carry out effective extension work among farmers (Farm and Market Analysis, Interpretations and Extension).

  2. Plan and administer in both private and public sectors by identifying and analyzing particular socio-economic constraints and opportunities in various sectors of the economy (Sectoral Planning).
  3. Carry out agricultural project planning and evaluation and policy formulation (Project Planning).

  4. Teach and conduct Research economics in agricultural institutions of learning .

  5. Participate in the general direction and actual implementation of agricultural development programs and projects (Agricultural Project Development and Administration).

  6. Where possible run their own individual farm-firms and agri-business enterprises including consultancy (Self-employment).

  7. Pursue graduate studies in Agricultural Economics (Further Studies).
Admission Requirements


The applicant should be able to fulfill J.A.B. admission requirements as follows:

  1. Applicants must satisfy the minimum entry requirement for admission into the University by attaining an average grade of C+ at KCSE or equivalent examinations.

  2. In addition to one above, applicants must have at least C+ passes in the following subjects: Biology, Mathematics and Chemistry.


  3. An added advantage will be given to applicants who have passed with at least a C+ grade pass in Economics, Commerce, Agriculture or Mathematics (more emphasis on mathematics).


  4. Admission may be granted to outstanding Diploma holders who have passed with Distinction, Credit or their equivalents in Farm Management, Agriculture or other related disciplines from recognized universities or colleges.

 

Course Duration


The entire study period for the degree programme shall extend over four academic years. Every academic year shall consist of two semesters of sixteen weeks each, the last two weeks of each semester shall be devoted to examinations. There shall be therefore a total of eight semesters during the four-year course of study.
