| THE POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN EDUCATION |
The Post-Graduate Diploma in Education is a one year professional course offered to those graduates who intend to teach but have not undergone any professional training. A Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) is awarded to candidates who satisfactorily complete the one-year course in the School of Education and pass the stipulated university examinations at the end of the study period.
Largely because of limited initial opportunities for school leavers to secure admission on the professional Bachelor of Education course, many degree candidates who would have wanted to make teaching a career end up doing a general course, either in the Arts or in the Sciences.
After graduation from University, many holders of the general degrees in the past, have found their way into the teaching profession. These people were employed as untrained graduate teachers.
A second crop of graduates with non-professional degree qualifications comprise those students who seek university education outside Kenya after completion of their secondary education locally. Upon completion of their studies, these graduates have in the past been taken up as untrained teachers in the school system in Kenya. To improve their career prospects and to enhance their individual professional, personal and vocational growth they need further preparation to become full-fledged professional teachers. This is best achieved by a spell of professional preparation through the PGDE Programme.
To help meet educational demands for well trained graduate teachers in the various disciplines at secondary school level, there is need for a comprehensive professional course that would give the generalist Bachelor of Arts, Science graduate the additional vocational preparation to help meet the demands of the teaching career at the relevant level one may be operating. Such a course will also give purpose to the efforts of those untrained graduate teachers who have no career prospects. It is for these reasons that PGDE in Education course will be appropriate in giving the necessary skills and tools of the trade to these teachers.
The Post-Graduate Diploma in Education course is aimed at providing the broad training requisite for:
Providing an opportunity for general graduates who wish to take up teaching as a career, to get professional training in education.
| OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME |
The Post-Graduate in Education course is a one year professional training in Education which aims at turning a general graduate into a professional teacher in the various disciplines of professional education. At the successful completion of the course, the teacher will have been provided with skills to enable him/her to:
- Teach competently at school or other learning institutions.
- Prepare and develop teaching plans, schemes of work, notes, teaching aids and be able to use such other resources and facilities that will promote learning as well as contribute to the planning, development and implementation of school curriculum.
- Organize appropriate opportunities and environment for the promotion of the teaching/learning process.
- Diagnose individual students learning strengths, difficulties and problems of social adjustment and be able to give counselling on a remedial level.
- Acquire skills for effective management.
A candidate must fulfill the following minimum qualifications for admission to the PGDE Programme.
- Have a minimum qualification of a first degree from a recognized university.
- Should have studied at least two subjects or their equivalent, taught at the secondary school level in Kenya.
The programme shall be completed in one calendar year, including Teaching Practice.
- Candidates admitted to the PGDE Course will take their courses in the School of Education, covering all the under listed professional areas of Education.

- Each candidate shall take a subject methods course in the subjects offered by the candidate as teaching subjects preparing him/her to teach in two school curriculum subjects such as:

During his/her course for the PGDE, the student will carry out one project in addition to course work which will:
- constitute a requirement for the partial fulfillment for the award of the PGDE in Education.
- be selected in consultation with a supervising member of staff.
For the project the student will identify a problem for investigation, research the problem and make recommendations in the form of a report. The final report will be presented in bound form.
To provide the students with practical experience, each student will undergo supervised Teaching Practice in his/her two subjects of specialization.
This practice will be carried out in a recognized Secondary School selected in consultation with University staff in charge of the Teaching Practice. The Teaching Practice will come at the end of the academic year. It will be for the duration of one secondary school academic term. The PGDE students will do their Teaching Practice and be supervised concurrently with the third year B.Ed students.

Third Term
Teaching Practice will come at the end of the second semester. It will be for the duration of one secondary school term.
University regulations shall apply.
The students project will be evaluated on the guidelines provided in University Regulations pertaining to projects, theses and dissertations. Two supervisors shall determine the Grade of the project. The project shall not be externalized and there will be no defense by the candidate.
The format and rubric of the project will follow that recommended by the School of Graduate Studies. Supervising staff will use these guidelines to evaluate and assess the students project reports.
| EVALUATION OF THE STUDENTS |
- Assessment at the end of a course shall consist of:
- A written examination which shall normally constitute 60% of the total marks in each course.
- Continuous assessment based on essays, laboratory assignments and such other tests as may be prescribed by the department. This will normally constitute 40% of the total marks.
Regulations Governing Examinations and Final Grading for the Award of the Certificate
At the end of each Semester, students will write an examination in the courses they will have covered. The examinations will be of 3 hours duration in each paper of the course.
- The final grading of the students for the award of the Post-Graduate Diploma in Education will be apportioned as follows:
