INTRODUCTION

The School of Human Resource Development (SHRD) was established in 1989, with the objective of organizing academic support programs to all the undergraduates students in the University. The school was also mandated to manage the continuing education programs and develop links with their academic institutions and industry. This was in line with the Mackay report of (1984).The school of Human Resource Development is headed by a Dean who is the administrative and academic head. Assisting the Dean on day-to-day administrative matter, is one administrator.

The School has successfully handled and implemented the required courses for the undergraduate programmes. The courses are skills based, with a developmental orientation for all first and second year students. In addition, optional courses that are needs based and faculty specific are offered to third and fouthth year students. The schoool has also focused energies on the development of Postgraduate programmes in Entreprenuership, Communication and Human Resource Management (HRM, which are already in place and have had a positive contribution towards the communities within the Western Region of Kenya and the whole country. Short courses have also been developed to meet the needs of the Kenyans, especially those from the Western Region of Kenya and Uganda.

The teaching staff have wide experience, knowledge and skills in as diverse areas as Economics, Linguistics, Entrepreneurship, Planning, Management, administration and Computer. They constitute a unique and admirable bedrock of modern world human resource developers.

VISION

To be a center of excellence and learning in applied Communication, Development, Human Resource, and Entrepreneurship Studies in response to the current global needs.

MISSION

To teach, train, carry out research, consultancy and out-reach programmes in communication Development Studies and Entreprenuership for Human Resource Development in a conducive environment; and working with all stakeholders

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the School of Human Resource Development are five fold:

  1. Train and expose students to development and oriental practical knowledge and experience necessary for them to understand and function efficiently in society. Thus it impacts diverse needs-based knowledge and socio-economic and political orientation on the learner.
  2. Offer continuing education and co-ordinate consultancy services for specific target groups and particularly those involved with agencies contributing to national development.
  3. Offer specialised training and carry out research in Human Resource Development, Communication and Entrepreneurship both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  4. Offer short tailor-made courses in HRM, project Management, Communication for effective management, quality teaching and learning.
  5. Offer correspondence and distance learning courses outside normal working hours to permit enrolment for people in employment. These course lead to the award of degrees, certificates and diplomas.

The School of Human Resource and Development has three main departments which are:

  • Development Studies
  • Communication Studies
  • Quantitative and Enterpreneurial Studies
