SCHOOL OF INFORMATION SCIENCES- DEPARTMENT OF OF LIBRARY, RECORDS MANAGEMENT AND INFORMATION STUDIES

The Department of Library, Records Management & Information Studies was established at the beginning of 2005/2006 academic year in accordance with the restructuring of academic programmes as recommended in the Moi University strategic plan 2004/2005 – 2013/2014.

The former departments of Library and Information Studies established in 1989 and Archives and Records Management established in 1991 merged to form the new department of Library, Records Management & Information Studies. It is one of the three departments that constitute the School of Information Sciences. The other two departments are Publishing and Media Studies, and Information Technology.

VISION

The vision of the department is in line with that of the School of Information Sciences namely to be recognized internationally as a centre of excellence in Information Sciences.

MISSION

TThe mission of the department is in line with that of the School of Information Sciences namely to offer education and training by developing high-level manpower for the management of information systems, services and resources in the country through practical and development oriented programmes, research, continuing education programmes and community-based information activities.

Further the department seems to:
  • Produce highly qualified information professionals in librarianship, documentation, records and archives management, information systems management and knowledge management.
  • Pursue excellence in teaching, research and scholarship in library, records management and information studies.
  • Produce professional leadership in the information profession in the country through research, consultancy services and organization and participation in continuing education programmes and services to community.
OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the department are to:
  • Equip students with relevant information and knowledge management skills necessary in the management of information systems and services.
  • Provide students with a wide range of knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for planning and promoting the free flow of information in a rapidly changing society.
  • Offer continuing education programme courses to all levels of practicing information professionals through seminars, workshops, conferences in order to keep abreast with new knowledge, skills, practices and attitudes in the profession.
  • Improve the professional standard and status of information professionals by providing professional leadership and participation in professional activities.
  • Engage in development and consultancy activities and services by providing expertise to the private and public sectors of the economy.
  • Conduct research on topical issues in library and information studies, records and archives management and disseminate findings through journal publications, workshops, seminars and conferences and extension services.
