Preample

Education is a basic investment for economic development and publications are its basic tools. As a result, a university press is necessary for promoting communication and self-expression by scholars, writers and artists - in form of ideas, feelings, attitudes, beliefs and knowledge.

Publications have and continue to be the best tools for individual study, being the constant and ever handy source of knowledge accumulated over time. The purpose of academic publishing is to serve scholars and scholarship in terms of communication of ideas, information and speculation that help to determine human venture. A university press therefore has three major functions: research, instruction and dissemination of results of scholarly enquiry. Publishing is a way of accomplishing the three.

Introduction

Moi University Press was established in June 1989 as a Desktop Publishing Unit (DTP) on the recommendations of the Senate, to publish textbooks in support of the courses taught at Moi University and at prices affordable to the university community. The press was also purposed to encourage the writing of textbooks and other publications by the academic staff of Moi University. The press is housed at the Margaret Thatcher Library (MTL) Building in Moi University, Main Campus as a department within the School of Information Sciences. Since its inception, the press has published textbooks; journals e.g. EAJIS, MAARIFA and EDUCATOR; monographs in varied academic disciplines.

Vision

To be the leading publisher of scholarly knowledge and information and through publishing carry the Moi University imprint into the literary world in all its forms.

Mission

The Moi University Press (MUP) is committed to publishing knowledge and information within and across frontiers for the advancement of scholarship, research, teaching, and service to society by publishing journals, books and monographs in different disciplines by learned writers for the edification of readers.

Role of Moi University Press

Moi University Press performs services that are of inestimable value to the scholarly establishment- researchers, teachers, librarians and the rest of the university community-and also to the broader world of readers, and ultimately to the society itself. The press makes available to the broader public full range and value research generated by the university faculties, and also helps connect the university to the surrounding community by publishing books of local interest and hosting events for local authors.

Moi University Press acquires, develops, designs, produces, markets and sells books and journals. But while commercial publishers focus on making money by publishing for popular audiences, the press mission is to publish works of scholarly, intellectual, or creative merit, often for a small audience of specialists.

The University Press is an extension of its parent institution (Moi University), and it is also a key player in a more general network-including learned societies, scholarly associations, and research libraries- that makes scholarly endeavour possible. Like the other nodes in the network, the press is charged with serving the public good by generating and disseminating knowledge. Many of the books we publish, then, are meant primarily for scholars or other people interested in certain concentrated fields of research.

Though scholarship is central to the mission of the university press, we also publish books of more general interest.
