SCHOOL OF MEDICINE - ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMMES

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.CHB.) Degree Programme
To be admitted to the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree programme, the candidate must satisfy the common requirements for entry into the University as stipulated in the Joint Admissions Board regulations. In addition, candidates must obtain at least the minimum cut off points for the year as determined from the following cluster drawn from the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education structure.

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics/Maths
  • English/Kiswahili

Candidates holding qualifications equivalent to the above from institutions recognized by Moi University Senate may also be admitted.

Candidates with suitable diplomas or University degrees in relevant fields who fulfil all other University entrance requirements may be considered for admission provided the Faculty of Health Sciences Board recommends, and the Senate approves it.

Bachelor of Nursing
For admission to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing programme the candidate must meet the following requirements:

  1. They must meet the common requirements for entry into the University, as stipulated by the Joint Admissions Board.
  2. In addition, candidates must obtain at least the minimum cut off points for the year as determined from the following subject cluster drawn from the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education structure.
    • Biology
    • Chemistry
    • Physics/Mathematics
    • English/Kiswahili

Those holding qualifications equivalent to the above from institutions recognized by Moi University Senate may also be considered for admission.

Candidates with relevant ordinary diploma from recognized institutions, and who fulfill all other University entrance requirements may also be considered for admission, provided the Faculty of Health Sciences Board recommends, and the Senate approves. Such candidates must have a minimum of credit pass in ordinary diploma programme.

All courses in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing programme shall be compulsory unless the Faculty Board recommends exemption and is approved by Senate.

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES

Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine
Applicants for the programme must:

  1. Be holders of the MBChB degree of Moi University or
  2. Be holders of MBChB degree or equivalent from other institutions recognized by Moi University senate.
  3. Be registered or be registrable as medical practitioner by the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board of Kenya (MPDB).
  4. Have worked for at least one year after internship.
  5. Pass admission interviews as determined by the Department of Postgraduate Committee.

Master of Medicine in Child Health and Pediatrics
Requirements as for Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine above.

Master of Medicine in Family Health
Requirements as for Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine but in addition must have worked for two years after intership.

Master of Philosophy in Medical Education

  1. The applicant should, satisfy any of the following requirements:-
    1. A Bachelor's degree in any health related areas.
    2. The equivalent of a Bachelor's degree in a health-related discipline with at least 3 years experience teaching in a Health Training Institution.
  2. The applicants in (b) (ii) may be required to appear for an interview.

Master of Science in Immunology
The Moi University common regulations governing admission shall apply.

Specifically, candidates considered should possess basic degree in biomedical Sciences, Medicine, Nursing, Dental Surgery, Environmental Health or equivalent degrees recognized by Moi University.

Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Education
The common regulations for admission for the Doctor of Philosophy shall apply.

In addition, the applicant must satisfy the following requirements:-

  1. An applicant must hold a Masters degree in Medical Education or a related discipline from Moi University
    OR
  2. Masters degree in Medical Education or related discipline from an institution recognized Moi University Senate.
  3. An applicant must have a minimum of three years of teaching or research experience in a health related disciplines.
