BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN AGRO-FORESTRY

INTRODUCTION

The Department of Forestry is the oldest department in Moi University, and has been producing BSc. Forestry graduates since 1985.  It is the sole institution offering professional forestry training in the country today, and has as its mandate to provide professional training in forestry - which is the art, science, and practice of managing and wise use of natural associated with and desired from forest lands.  The resources from forest land include wood products, water, forage, wildlife, recreation and environmental quality.  Because of the diversity of resources from forest land, a professional forestry curriculum must recognise and take into account forestry’s multidisciplinary nature.

This curriculum reflects the multidisciplinary nature of forestry, and contains diverse courses ranging from natural and social sciences, to applied courses in forestry, wood science, wildlife science, economics, business and management sciences to natural resource policy and legislation.  In comparison to the old BSc. forestry curriculum, this new one includes a strengthening of the social, business and economic aspects of forestry, while also aiming at imparting proper attitudes for proper management and conservation of forest resources and enterprises.

In addition to the undergraduate program, the department also offers postgraduate training at the Masters level, and a Doctorate programme is currently under development.  This curriculum is therefore also intended to provide the students with a sound basis for future postgraduate work.
