BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN WOOD SCIENCE & INDUSTRIAL PROCESSING INTRODUCTION
The Bachelor of Science degree in Wood Science and Industrial Processes training is aimed at producing graduates who will contribute practically and effectively in wood-based industries, government and non- government agencies dealing with wood and its products. The programme is premised on the continued shrinkage of Kenya’s national forests resource endowment, currently estimated to cover only 1.7% of the land. The coverage notwithstanding, the population continues to rely on this resource for energy, shelter and a range of other supplies. Besides, the Micro and Small Enterprises (MSE), referred to as "Jua Kali", continues to rely heavily on wood. While efforts to increase the cover are on going, it is essential that wise and efficient use of the available resource be enhanced. This curriculum is developed in response to these emerging needs. It will provide relevant skills to steer the efficient utilization of forest resources as Kenya aims to be a newly industrialized country by the year 2020.
The curriculum is multidisciplinary consisting of courses in science, engineering, business and forestry with specialized courses in Wood Science and Industrial Processes. It consists of enriched courses in the areas of engineering, information and communication technology, wood science and industrial processes, business and professional ethics emphasizing industrial and field experience with advanced problem solving skills. These are aimed at providing graduates of the program with the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to contribute positively to the wood-based industry, research and advanced training. It is more relevant to the needs of the wood-based industry, incorporating both the formal and informal MSE’s.
The proposed name change to “Wood Science & Industrial Processes” is considered firstly as it adequately captures the programme content more effectively; and secondly, will market the programme appropriately as a vehicle to contribute to the broader national goal of becoming industrialized within the projected period.
OBJECTIVES
The broad objectives of the program are to produce broad-based graduates able to: 1. Apply knowledge gained in Wood Science and Industrial Processes for efficient and safe production and utilization of wood and wood-based products 2. Pursue advanced training, conduct research and venture into entrepreneurship.
The specific objectives of the program are that the graduates should: 1. Apply knowledge of wood physical, chemical and mechanical properties in the efficient conversion and processing of wood into useful products. 2. Demonstrate an understanding of wood as an industrial raw material and its applications. 3. Be able to manage firms and venture into entrepreneurship in wood-based industries and services. 4. Maintain the highest professional standards and ethics in the management, conversion and utilization of the forest and wood resources while actively contributing to the industrialization process of the Kenyan nation 5. Be able to undertake postgraduate training, identify community needs, carry out research and provide professional outreach and consultancy services in Wood Science and Industrial Processes.
