BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE IN FISHERIES AND AQUATIC SCIENCES

 

Introduction

 

The development and management of capture and culture fisheries resources demand multi-disciplinary training in order to provide knowledge, skills and technological know how to understand the complex and dynamic systems for sustainable utilization.  The Bachelor of Sciences (Fisheries) curriculum focuses on an all round fisheries graduate able to understand and interpret the interacting systems in the sector which may be biological, social, political, administrative or economic in nature to sustainably manage the fisheries resources for the present and future generations.

Graduates will have gained appropriate competencies to enable them take up job opportunities in culture and capture fisheries management, fisheries research, aquatic environment management, fisheries project planning and management, fisheries education and extension, administration, fish processing, fisheries industry entrepreneurship, and to pursue postgraduate training.

 

Objectives of the programme

 

1.     To provide students with knowledge and skills in fisheries biology appropriate to participating or advising on the management of capture and culture fisheries.

2.     To equip students with knowledge and capacity to apply techniques in post-harvest technology.

3.     To provide knowledge and skills in the management of fisheries and aquaculture enterprises and to promote entrepreneurship.

4.     To provide knowledge and skills to conduct fisheries research, extension and pursue postgraduate studies.

5.     To interpret and apply fisheries policies and law for the management, conservation and utilization of fisheries and related environmental resources for community development.
