DIPLOMA IN TOURISM AND WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT

Introduction

The Diploma in Tourism and Wildlife Studies (TWS) course is a joint programme between Moi University (MU), Faculty of Forest Resources and Wildlife Management (FRWM) and the Wildlife Clubs of Kenya (WCK).

The course aims at meeting the needs of the middle cadre professionals in the tourism and wildlife sector that is currently no longer offered in Kenya. The tourist sector is one of the most important industries in our country and this is to a large degree driven by our wildlife and other natural resources. The production of middle cadre personnel trained and skilled in both tourism and wildlife management has not been addressed in this country.

It is for this reason that MU and the WCK have teamed up to meet this demand. MU Departments of Wildlife (WLM) and Tourism (TOU) are the only institutions of higher learning offering specialised degree and postgraduate training in wildlife management and tourism in the Eastern Africa region. WCK is Africa’s leading and founder youth conservation organisation. The scholarly expertise of MU and the practical experiences of WCK have joined in the development of this course.

The special focus of the course is its emphasis on community orientated programmes and initiatives in wildlife management and tourism.

The course training is done at WCK, Langata Training centre (LTC) and approved and validated by MU. Specialised lectures and courses will be given by MU lecturers either at LTC or in Eldoret as is appropriate. The Diploma certificate will be awarded by MU.

The TWS diploma course is quite flexible providing graduates with a range of employment opportunities in tour companies, parks and reserves, airports, hotels, wildlife forums, group ranches and other community initiatives, private sector (NGOs), conservation education centres and field study centres.
