MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY IN FISHERIES

 

Introduction

 

Sustainable development in the fishing industry and conservation of aquatic resources requires relevantly trained manpower. It is for this reason that the Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences training programme is directed towards the need for research and advanced analysis of concepts in Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Resources Management. Graduates of the programme will earn competence in fisheries research and other related issues for careers in scientific research at universities, the public sector and other relevant institutions.  The programme is structured to offer graduating students options in Fisheries Management, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Resources Management. All students enrolling for the M.Phil. programme will be required to take core courses, required courses and elective courses, unless exempted by the departmental committee. The programme will normally cover two academic years of full-time study spread through four semesters.

 

Objectives

 

i)              To train high level manpower with competence in handling fisheries research, management, teaching and related issues for sustainable development.

ii)             To contribute towards sustainable development of the fishing and aquaculture industries through training in research and natural resource management and production.

iii)           To contribute towards sustainable utilization of aquatic resources through high level manpower training with competence in handling research in aquatic sciences
