MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY DEGREE IN PROTECTED AREA MANAGEMENT (PAM) BY DISTANCE LEARNING) IntroductionThe Mphil degree in PAM by Distance Learning is run jointly by the Department of Wildlife Management and International Centre for Protected Landscape (ICPL). The Department of Wildlife Management falls within the School of Natural Resource Management and offers courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The department has its own Resource Center, designed and equipped specifically for the Master’s programme in Protected area Management by Distance Learning. The International Center for Protected Landscapes is an independent organization whose mission is to increase international awareness of the protected landscape approach to conservation and sustainable economic development. It stresses the importance of safeguarding the diversity of natural resources and cultural values, and advocates a “people first” approach to environmental management. Based in the UK, ICPL works in partnership with Moi University and other major academic institutions around the world to deliver programmes at higher degree level. ICPL is an active member of IUCN. General ObjectivesThe aim of the M.Phil in protected area management is to provide theoretical and practical education, and vocational training, in an area of conservation which is undergoing a rapid conceptual change and yet which is of key importance to the conservation and management of natural resources in Africa. Specific Objectives· The programme focuses on the management of protected areas and the importance of an integrated approach to conservation and development both within and beyond such areas. It embraces a community approach to conservation, based on the protected landscape model, for the promotion of appropriate and effective natural resources management. · Whilst drawing upon global experiences where applicable, the programme has a particular focus on the concepts and approaches as they relate to sub Sahara Africa. It especially targets professionals already working in this field but seeking higher qualifications and new management skills. Forward to Admission Requirements
