DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN HISTORY

Introduction

This program is designed to enable students to specialize in diverse areas of history. It covers a number of important themes that relate to the history of Kenya, Africa and other parts of the world. Also included are specific courses on the philosophy and theory of history and research methodology.

Objectives

The programme aims at achieving the following objectives:

  1. To assist students to acquire the highest level of expertise in their areas of specialization within the discipline.
  2. To equip students with research skills and an analytical mind that will enable them to produce knowledge.
  3. To enhance students' ability to disseminate knowledge through teaching and publications.
  4. T o enhance students' appreciation of the role of culture in society.
  5. To inculcate in students principles of good leadership.

Admission Requirements

To qualify for admission into a Doctor of Philosophy (D.Phil.) programme, applicants shall be holders of a Master's degree of Moi University or those recognized by Moi University Senate, in History or related disciplines.

Submission of Application

Common regulations of the School of Graduate Studies shall apply.

Design of the Programme

The programme will consist of Course Work, Examination and Thesis. The minimum units of course work shall be 21 units and a maximum of 24 units. These shall be made up of at least 12 units at the level 900 courses (D.Phil. course) and the rest from the level 800 courses.

Classification of the Degree

All courses shall be done during the first year of study for both full and part-time students. The rest of the time shall be devoted to proposal writing, research, data analysis and thesis writing.

Year I Semester I
During year one, semester one, students shall take at least 9 units of course work and a minimum of 6 units for research proposal.

Year I Semester II
During second semester of year one, students shall take at least 12 units of course work and a maximum of 3 units of the research proposal.
