| DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN KISWAHILI |
The Doctor of Philosophy Programme in Kiswahili at Moi University shall normally be by coursework, examination and thesis (CET programme).
- To produce scholars in Kiswahili who are capable of teaching, initiating and supervising academic programmes and carrying out research in institutions of higher learning and elsewhere.
- To produce specialists who may be called upon to fill key positions and offer consultancy and other services at nursery, primary, secondary, and tertiary levels, in government and other circles related to Kiswahili and Other African Languages.
- To generate scholarly and well researched academic documents which will assist students and researchers at various levels of the educational system in their day to day scholarly pursuits.
The common regulations of Moi University for eligibility to doctoral studies shall apply. In addition, an applicant must have a Master's degree in Kiswahili of Moi University or its equivalent from other recognised universities. Holders of Master's degrees in Linguistics, Literature or other related disciplines may also apply. An applicant may also be required to attend an interview organised by the department.
| Duration of the Programme |
The doctoral programme shall normally last for at least six and eight consecutive semesters for full-time and part-time students respectively, and for a maximum of 8 and 10 semesters respectively.
Thesis option:This is normally by research only. The student embarks on fieldwork immediately after successful defence of the research proposal.
The CET option:The CET programme requires the student to complete a minimum of 21 units of coursework successfully before starting research work for the student thesis. The full time student must clear the 21 Units within the first two consecutive semesters; part time students must clear the 21 units within the first three consecutive semesters after starting the programme. All students in the CET option must study KIS 901 and 909 that are Core.
Year 1
Semester I
- Minimum 6 units of level 9 (related to thesis topic).
- 3 units from either level 9 or level 8 courses.
- 6 units Research Proposal (KIS: 998A).
Semester II
- 6 units (at least) of level 9, (related to thesis topic).
- 3 units (level 9)
- 3 units (either level 8 or 9).
- 3 units Research Proposal (KIS: 998B)
Year 2
15 units: Research only throughout (KIS: 999).
Year 3
15 units: Research and completion of Thesis (KIS 999).
6 units: Examination, conduct of research and supervising, submission of thesis and exemptions: The rules and regulations of the School of Graduate Studies, Moi University shall apply.
