| DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN RELIGION |
The Department of Religion offers a D.Phil. degree in five major areas of Religion:
- Christianity
- African Religion
- Oriental and Ancient Religions
- Islam
- Comparative Study of Religion
The religious pluralism, which characterizes many societies today and the pervasiveness of religion in human experience, especially in Africa, demands trained manpower in different fields of religion. Such training will enable graduates to teach and do research in the field of religious experience and to relate religion to processes of modernization and development. The programme therefore, takes a comparative view of the study of religion.
The D.Phil. programme in religion is intended to assist students to:
- Acquire in-depth knowledge in their area of specialisation
- Acquire additional knowledge of the religions outside their areas of specialization in order to develop a multi-disciplinary perspective and a holistic inter-disciplinary approach to issues
- Conduct independent research and present findings in a coherent and comprehensive manner, with a view to contributing creatively to the enrichment of scholarship in their fields
- Undertake teaching responsibilities and offer administrative and consultancy services to organisations and institutions
- Apply their expertise in finding solutions to problems in society
