WELCOME TO THE SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES
MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY IN ANTHROPOLOGY

The aim of this programme is to train high level manpower- academics, policy-makers, planners and managers to acquire skills to participate conscientiously in development activities and contexts; skills to enable them understand the workings of society and methodological perspectives for conducting research and seeking their application in a variety of contexts.
Objectives

The objectives are:

  1. To equip persons with competence to participate in teaching anthropology/cultural studies.
  2. To train students in research and analytical skills.
  3. To produce high level manpower for the civil and private sectors of the economy capable of participating in policy formulation, and planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of development projects and extension work.
  4. To prepare students for further studies.
Admission Requirements

Candidates must satisfy the minimum Moi University requirements for the M.Phil degree programme. Specifically;

  1. Applicants must be holders of a first class or second class honours upper Division degree of Moi University in Anthropology or related discipline or its equivalent.
  2. Holders of a lower second class honours degree of Moi University in Anthropology or related discipline or its equivalent and must in addition posses a postgraduate qualification in a relevant field or a postgraduate research experience as evidenced by at least one published paper in a referred journal, a book or a chapter in a book.
Design and duration of the Programme

The programme shall be by coursework, examination, research and thesis and shall normally extend over a period of two years (four semesters) of full-time attendance, or four years distributed into eight semesters of part-time attendance from the date of registration. Provision will be made for the same programme to be mounted in the evening and week-ends for those unable to attend lectures and seminars during the normal working hours.

During the first and second semesters of study, candidates may, with the permission of the Department, audit undergraduate courses or courses offered in other disciplines to make-up for apparent inadequacies or to strengthen their proposed research areas.

Classification of the Degree

Common university regulations shall apply.
Examination Regulations

The common regulations governing Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) degree programmes at Moi University shall apply.
