SCHOOL OF SCIENCE - DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN PHYSICS

Introduction

The department of physics offers a programme leading to Doctor of Philosophy degree in physics. The program is offered by elective (or specialization) courses, examinations and thesis in the fields of photovoltaics, condensed matter physics, superconductivity and theoretical physics.

Objectives

The objectives of the programme are:

  1. To enable the candidates to acquire an adequate understanding of the principles of physics and to contribute to the advancement of this subject.
  2. To enable the candidates to conduct an original investigation (or research) leading to thesis work.

Admission requirements

In addition to the common university regulations for admission to a Doctor of Philosophy degree programme the candidate must hold an M.Phil. degree in Physics, of Moi University or an equivalent degree as recognised by the senate of Moi University.

Programme Requirements

The programme emphasises an original research leading to thesis work. The candidate must therefore submit a research proposal within a period stipulated by the common regulations for D.Phil. programmes of Moi University.

The candidates will be required to have passed the following courses at M.Phil. (or equivalent) level.
Mathematical Physics (3 units)
Classical mechanics (3 units)
Statistical mechanics (3 units)
Electrodynamics (3 units)
Quantum mechanics (3 units)

Those candidates who do not meet the above requirement in one or more courses will be required to take and pass the respective M.Phil (i.e. 800-series) level courses during first semester of the first academic year. However those who meet this requirement will automatically have the 15 units credited towards their first semester of the first year programme requirements. These candidates will then proceed to the second semester of the first academic year.

Note: Departmental Seminars are mandatory for D. Phil. Students. Visits to some of the relevant industries will be an essential part of the programme.

Examinations Regulations

The Moi University regualtions for the conduct of MPhil examinations shall apply.

Examination of thesis

The University Common Regulations shall apply.
