The Scientific Equipment industry is growing rapidly and practitioners are struggling hard to cope with the ever-increasing complexity of equipment development. Meanwhile, the management, maintenance and installation of these equipments have led to many failures and successes. While technologies, processes and methods have advanced appreciably, Laboratory and Equipment management remains a people-intensive process.
A serious problem plaguing Laboratories in developing countries are, poor Laboratory management and practices, poor equipment installation and maintenance practices. This problems are a major cause of overspending in procurement of equipment, chronic problems with dependability (safety, reliability and security) and maintainability of this products.
Laboratories in developing countries need to rely on modern management and engineering practices to develop high-quality and dependable equipment. Such practices comprise a variety of methods, tools and techniques based on solid foundation of Laboratory management techniques and the use and maintenance techniques of these equipments.
This course has been designed to provide a forum for presentation and discussion of such practices.
The course is meant for practicing laboratory managers from any organization including Universities, polytechnics and high schools, Hospitals, Research institutions laboratories and other Laboratory technical staff. Selected candidates must attend and participate throughout the entire period.
The course provides a set of topics to teach modern practices in laboratory and equipment management. The participants will be able to learn about the state-of-the-art in this area. The course is also meant as an open forum where participants and lecturer alike can share their experiences, discuss ideas, and seek solutions to common problems.
Participants in the course are expected to achieve the following, among others:-
- Acquire knowledge required for ISO/IEC 17025 Laboratory Standards requirements.
- Acquire knowledge in laboratory quality management principles.
- Acquire knowledge in equipment database.
Lecture materials will be provided to all participants (hard and soft copies).
One week of ten (10) 3-hour sessions.
Quality Management is generally seen as a key component of management practices. Together with laboratory equipment management techniques such as formal methods, it can produce competent personnel of high quality managerial skills. The course aims to cover the following:-
Topics
- Equipment (maintenance, testing and calibration).
- Laboratory Waste Disposal and Management (equipment obsolescence, chemical/nuclear disposal, radiation protection)
- Safety in Laboratory
- Quality Assurance/Quality Control and ISO Laboratory Standards ISO/IEC 17025 requirements
- Laboratory Information Management Systems
- Laboratory Facilities (buildings, tools, water, electricity, environment)
- Stores/Records (personnel/equipment database, documentation, software updates)
