SCHOOL OF SCIENCE - MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY IN PHYSICS

Introduction

The department of Physics offers a programme leading to Masters of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Physics.
The study is offered by coursework, research and thesis.

Objectives

The objectives of the programme are:

  1. To enable the students to acquire an adequate understanding of the principles of Physics.
  2. To expose the students to experimental methods in laboratories and research skills through working on a thesis, thus acquiring the theoretical knowledge and the experimental skills. This will enable the graduate to satisfy the high manpower requirements needed for the development of the nation in the fields of science and technology.
  3. To encourage students to choose experimental, applied or theoretical physics projects.

Entry Requirements

In addition to the common Moi University regulations for admission to a Master's degree the candidate must hold at least a Second Class honours degree in physics of Moi University or equivalent degree as recognized by the Senate of Moi University.

Submission and processing of applications

Submission and processing of applications will follow common regulations for Master's degrees of Moi University.

Examinations Regulations

The Moi University regualtions for the conduct of MPhil examinations shall apply.

Submission and examination of thesis

The submission and examination of the thesis of a candidate will be done according to the common regulations for the Masters degree.

Structure of the programme

The. programme shall consist of coursework, examinations and thesis, and shall extend over a period of four semesters of full-time attendance from the date of registration. The progress shall be measured by examinations and research preparations.

The coursework shall consist of 30 units comprising 21 units of core courses, 6 units of specialization courses and a minimum of 3 units of the elective courses. Research proposal and thesis shall constitute the rest of the course requirement.
