Dr. Odipo Osano
Dean, School of Environmental Studies

Well maintained
Environment at SES

INTRODUCTION

The establishment of the School of Environmental Studies at Moi University was a part of the declared national policy towards preparation for the rational management of natural resources and the environment for sustainable development in Kenya. To that effect, the concept of the School was built into the Report of the Presidential Working Party on the Second University in Kenya, issued in September 1981. The Working Party took note of the "increasing emphasis being laid on Environmental management in the country..." which, unfortunately, had ".....not received sufficient intellectual and scholarly backing".

VISION

To be acclaimed globally as a provider of high quality multidisciplinary training, research, information, consultancy and extension services on the Environmental and Natural Resources issues.

MISSION

To stimulate the development of expertise in the field of environmental conservation and management through cutting edge facilitation of interdisciplinary learning research, outreach and consultancy.

OBJECTIVES

  1. Develop SES at Moi University into a recognized centre of excellence in environmental research, education and training.
  2. Develop professional and research capabilities in all major areas of environment, which are of local, national and regional significance.
  3. Help integrate the Environmental dimensions systematically into the formal education system.
  4. Develop effective Environmental extension and consultancy services in order to ensure the incorporation of environmental considerations into the development activities of public, co-operative and private sectors.
  5. Contribute to the increase of Environmental awareness among educationists, government officials, industrialists, business managers, community leaders, voluntary workers and the general public.
  6. Contribute to the resolution of national Environmental issues by offering courses that will produce professionals equipped with knowledge, awareness, skills, understanding and concern for the environment so as to incorporate environmental considerations in all national development strategies and plans.
