INTRODUCTION

Public health is concerned with the protection, preservation and promotion of the health of communities and populations. Public health professionals therefore need to be appropriately trained to respond to the various community health problems. Through training and acquisition of relevant knowledge and skills in a multidisciplinary manner, public health professionals will understand how to identify and approach issues affecting populations, be able to develop appropriate strategies for resolving them, and monitor their implementation. The School of Public Health (SPH) thus provides opportunities for such training, as well as for research and public health practice.

The School of Public Health offers post-graduate training programme leading to the award of the degree of Master of Public Health (MPH), with specialisation in the following areas: Hospital Administration, Health Services Management, Epidemiology and Disease Control, Health Promotion, Occupational Health and Safety, Human Nutrition, Maternal and Child Health, and Disaster Management and Preparedness.

OBJECTIVES

The MPH programme provides a comprehensive preparation of students to address the various challenges of public health.
At the end of the programme, graduates should be able to:

  • Develop and participate in the formulation of health policies.
  • Plan, manage and evaluate various public health programmes.
  • Develop research proposals, implement and manage research projects in public health.
  • Mobilize and manage resources for the promotion of public health.
  • Promote and coordinate the development of health promotion programmes at both local and national levels.

    DURATION OF M.PHIL PROGRAMMES

The duration of the programme shall be a minimum of two (2) academic years of full time study. An academic year is divided into two Semesters, each comprising 16 weeks. The programme shall be by coursework, examination and Thesis. The coursework will be covered during the first year of study while research and thesis will be undertaken in the second year of study.

    DESIGN OF THE PROGRAMME

The Master of Public Health programme has a total of 51 units, including 18 units of the six core common courses, 18 Units of required courses for the various areas of specialization and 15 Units of research and thesis. In addition, students may take a maximum of six units of optional courses during their second year of study.
