The Moi University Chepkoilel campus (The home of Natural and Applied Sciences) was started in 1990 as a branch of Moi University to deal with increased student numbers following a double intake that was occasioned by the change of Kenya's education system from 7-6-3 to 8-4-4. Situated 9 km from Eldoret town along the Eldoret- ziwa road, Chepkoilel Campus has a serene and comfortable environment (away from the hustle and bustle of Eldoret town) that has made it a wonderful place of learning. The campus was formerly Moi teachers college.
This science based campus that has grown steadily from initial one Department of Forestry to 5 Schools and 16 Academic Departments with a student population of over 6,000 students. Chepkoilel Campus (the Blaze of Glory) provides a conducive learning environment for students. It has a well stocked library, laboratories and lecture halls. A Students Centre with a variety of facilities geared to students needs provides an excellent atmosphere.
Chepkoilel has 1,050 acres of land, most of which is set aside for Agricultural purposes. Our highly mechanized farm is recognized countrywide and even internationally for its quality products in livestock, horticulture and cereals. We are the current champions of the Uasin - Gishu District Agricultural Society of Kenya (ASK) show.
It's out of such recognition that the Namibian Minister for Agricuture recently visited Chepkoilel Campus to establish possible links that would see Namibian Agricultural personnel train here or come for exchange programmes.
The school of Natural Resources in Chepkoilel is of it's own kind among both public and private universities in Kenya. This School has unique degree programmes such as Fisheries, Forestry, Wildlife Management and Wood science Technology that are not offered anywhere else in Kenya.
At the same time, Chepkoilel campus is the only institution of higher learning with a Fish farm in East Africa. The campus today has 47 fish ponds covering a total area of 2.5 hectares. It is basically used for training and extension services, besides serving as an income generating activity for the Department of Fisheries.
Over 1,500 fish farmers from North Rift and Western Kenya have been trained here on basic Fish farming technologies.
The Campus is currently headed by Prof. B. M. Khaemba as Principal. Chepkoilel has had five other Principals including Prof. Jacob Bitok who served as Ag. Principal, Prof. J. Irina and Prof. David Some, both who became Vice chancellors of Moi University at various times.
Other former heads of Chepkoilel Campus include Prof. A. Mutema and Prof. Margaret Kamar (currently Eldoret East Constituency MP) who later became Deputy Vice Chancellors (DVCs) of Egerton and Moi University respectively, Prof. J. Lonyangapuo who is currently Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Industrialization.
