History of IGERD

In 1995, the idea of establishing a Women's Bureau to take care of the special needs of female staff and students was nurtured in the School of Medicine (Faculty of Health Sciences) by female members of staff. The Women's Bureau was launched in 1997at a workshop in Kabarnet Hotel where the idea of an Institute for Gender was mooted. A second workshop was held in Eldoret in 1998 under SIDA/SAREC sponsorship. A proposal document to Moi University Management followed in February 1999. In October 2000, the University Management appointed a committee to revisit the above proposal and steer it to its implementation stage. In 2001 the Committee led by Dr. Wanjiku Khamasi visited Makerere University, Egerton University and University of Nairobi- Institute of Development Studies. The aim was to find out how the institutions in the region were addressing gender issues and broadly the gender agenda. In 2001 the Committee proposed that Moi University create an Institute for Gender Equity, Research and Development and presented the proposal document to the Vice Chancellor. In November 5th 2003, Institute for Gender Equity, Research & Development-IGERD was launched by the Minister for Gender, Sports and Culture and Moi University Council under the leadership of Dr. Eddah Gachukia. However, it was not until 2005 that IGERD was institutionalized as one of Moi University units. Through the Strategic Plan, the University committed itself to: enhance gender balance and equity in staff recruitment, promotion, student enrollment and in the overall University policy decision making processes.

In August 2005, Dr. Wanjiku Khamasi was appointed as the Director of IGERD.
