SUPPLIMENTARY RESEARCH FUNDS AND DOCTORAL SCHOLARSHIPS

CALL FOR PROPOSALS-2009 AWARDS

1. PREAMBLE

In November 5th 2003 Moi University launched the Institute of Gender Equity, Research and Development (IGERD) whose mission is: to advocate, develop and promote gender equity in all aspects of life through education, research and collaboration and linkages at local, national, regional and international levels. The mission of IGERD complements that of the University that includes 'creating conducive work and learning environment for the betterment of society'. The vision of IGERD is to be an advocate and promoter of gender equity for the benefit of social justice.

The objectives of IGERD are to:

  1. Advocate and promote gender equity through affirmative action.
  2. Promote development of gender policies.
  3. Promote multi-disciplinary research on gender issues at the local, national and regional levels.
  4. Advocate and promote the education of women and girls.
  5. Set up academic programs at certificate and post graduate levels.
  6. Establish a gender desk on each campus to address students and staff real life issues.
  7. Advocate policies that promote reproductive health and well being of women and families.
  8. Create collaboration and linkages at the local, national, regional and international levels.
  9. Institute strategies for sustainability.

To achieve the above objectives, IGERD will continually embark on a multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral approach in each of the following areas:

  • Research
  • Training programs
  • Extension and,
  • Consultancy, collaboration and linkages.

2. MU-VLIR-UOS-Gender Equity Project

The Gender Equity Project is one of the six projects under MU-VLIR-UOS-Program. The project is housed in the Institute of Gender Equity and Research Development, which is a unit under the Office of the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research and Extension. By 2012, the project is expected to improve gender awareness and expertise at Moi University, improve equal representation at different levels of development and decision making and in addition, increase research and outreach on gender issues in Moi University and in its environs.

3. SCHOLARSHIPS ANNOUNCEMENT 2009

A. Supplementary Research Funds:

  1. Supplementary research funds will be available to four (4) Master of Philosophy and one (1) Doctor of Philosophy students in 2009/2010. These shall be students whose research proposals are designed to address different aspects of gender. Applications are invited from female students. Successful applicants will receive Ksh. 80,000 (M. Phil) and Ksh. 100,000 (D. Phil). The funds are meant to supplement other sources. Applicants must therefore show how they intend to finance the entire research.
  2. Application process:
    Interested candidates should:
    1. Submit a full proposal not exceeding 20 typed double spaced pages, Font 12, Times New Roman, including bibliography and annexure and two (2) page summary. Proposals in any other language should include a two-page summary in English.
    2. Include full contact details e.g. Cellphone number, email, and one (1) colored passport size photos.
    3. Proposals submitted to IGERD should have been considered and approved at Departmental and/or School level and duly endorsed as the final and official M.Phil or D. Phil proposal by supervisors and Dean.
  3. Deadlines:
    1. Proposals must be submitted:
      1. To respective post graduate committees by 9th January 2009
      2. To Director IGERD by 30th July 2009
    2. Short listed applicants will be expected to present their proposals at a seminar to be organized by IGERD by 15th August 2009.
    3. Only successful candidates will be contacted thereafter.

B. Two Doctoral Scholarships Tenable in Belgium

  1. Two split-doctoral scholarships designed to support female staff at Moi University are available on competitive basis. Successful candidates will commence their studies in September 2009. Interested candidates should have either MA, M. Phil., M. Sc. or M.Ed.; a strong academic background and a vast experience in both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. Applicants with any of the following background are invited to apply: Economics, Business Management, Business Administration, Law, and Humanities/Social Sciences (arts, studies, cultural studies, social studies).
  2. Proposals should be in any of the following topical areas:
    1. Intra-household allocation of resources
    2. Gender and new aid modalities (Paris Agenda on Aid Effectiveness)
    3. Family law and legal capacity of women
    4. Gender and national and international migration
    5. Gender mainstreaming in organizations
    6. Religion and female genital cutting from a comparative perspective
    7. Gender and inter-religious dialogue
  3. Application process:
    1. Expression of interest: Candidates should send a two page concept paper on one of the areas listed above to the Director-IGERD by 30th January 2009. This should be via email and as a hard copy. See contact address and email below. In addition, certified copies of academic transcripts for the masters degree program and two letters of reference should be attached (one must be from your head of department). NB: Before starting the concept paper visit IGERD for more details.
    2. Full proposals: Successful candidates will be invited to send full proposals to the Director IGERD by January 30th 2009. The proposal should not exceed 20 typed double spaced pages, Font 12 Times New Roman, including bibliography and annexure and an abstract. Include full contact details e.g. Cell-phone number, email, and one (1) colored passport size photo.
    3. Proposal presentation seminar: Applicants will be required to present their PhD proposals in a seminar to be communicated to successful applicants. The seminar will serve as the final short listing process. Visit IGERD for a copy of this advert
