IGERD Advocates and
Promotes Gender Equity

PREAMBLE

The Institute for Gender Equity, Research and Development (IGERD) was conceived to be a place where meaningful discourse and interaction on gender and development at Moi University and its environs would take place. IGERD was launched in 2003, a move that fulfilled one of the objectives set out by the Presidential Working Party on the establishment of Moi University contained in the Mackay Report of 1984. Establishment of IGERD also came at a time when the world is focusing on the issue of gender and development with a clearer vision and commitment. The clarity was articulated at the UN Millennium Summit in 2000 where discussions outlined the Millennium Development Goals (MDG).

Moi University has not fully undertaken gender mainstreaming in all its aspects including policy, management and academic programs. The University (Strategic Plan 2005-2014) is committed to entrenching gender mainstreaming through deliberate efforts to enhance gender balance and equity in staff recruitment and promotion, student enrollment and in the overall University policy decision-making processes. IGERD is therefore mandated to spearhead gender parity and related issues.

VISION

To be an advocate and promoter of gender equity for the benefit of social justice.

MISSION

To advocate, develop, and promote gender equity in all aspects of life through research, policy development, education, and collaboration and linkages at local, national, regional and international levels.
