About the Symposium

The Moi University 1st International Gender Symposium was held on January 20th - 23rd 2010 at Sirikwa Hotel. The symposium was officially opened by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Extension) Prof. Bob Wishitemi on behalf of the Moi University Vice Chancellor.

The Symposium was attended by top scholars from different parts of the world including Canada, Belgium, Nigeria, Tanzania and Uganda among others. The Keynote address was given by three professional scholars in different filds:

  1. Prof. Dr. Nathalie Holvoet, Antwerp University, Belgium (Topic: New aid modalities through a gender lens).
  2. Ms. Margaret W. Ngunjiri, Public Sector Specialist, The MDG Center, East& Southern Africa, Nairobi Office (Topic: Addressing Poverty and Inequality; the case of the Millenium Villages Project in Africa).
  3. Maurice Muthiga, a community mobilizer and the Public Relations Officer, St. Martin CSA, Nyahururu Kenya. (Topic: Community Mobilization: A case of St. Martin CSA).

During the 2 day symposium, several papers and posters were presented by the participants on various emerging topical issues on Gender under the following sub-themes:

  3. Gender based violence
    1. Intimate partner violence
    2. Men as partners in preventing GBV
    3. Best practices in addressing sexual harassment in public and private institutions

  4. Gender, disability and reproductive health
  5. Gender, reproductive and mental health
  6. Gender and resource management
  7. Gender and entrepreneurship
  8. Gender and migration
  9. Gender and (inter)religious dialogue
  10. Gender, media and popular culture
  11. Research, knowledge, power and agency
    1. Emerging theories on feminism and masculinities
    2. Methodological issues in gender research
    3. Ethical issues in gender research and programs
    4. Gender, conflict and peace building research
    5. History of women's movements in different regions of the world and their contribution to gender equality
    6. Gendered ways of disseminating information
  12. Gender, sexuality, HIV and AIDS
  13. Technology

The Symposium was organised by the Gender Equity Project led by Prof. Em. Mieke Van Haegendoren (GEP North Team Leader, University of Hasselt, Belgium) and Dr. Wanjiku Khamasi (GEP South Team Leader & Director IGERD, Moi University).

The Symposium was officially closed on 22nd January 2010 by Mr. Areba (A Senior offcial of the Ministry of Higher Education) who represented the Minister for Higher Education Dr. Sally Kosgey.

Workshop 2: Analysing Qualitative Research

The Symposium was followed by a Workshop on Analysing Qualitative Research on 23rd January 2010 facilitated by Prof. Marilyn Porter, a University Professor in Sociology and Women's Studies at Memorial University in Newfoundland, Canada. The workshop was organized in five major sessions as follows:
Session 1: Review the purpose and priorities of qualitative research.
Session 2: The Principles of Qualitative Analysis
Session 3: Organizing the data. This was followed by an intersession which included a Practical Execise and Report back.
Session 4: The analysis
Session 5: Writing up followed by conclusion, feedback and further steps.

The workshop on Analysing Qualitative Research was officialy closed by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Extension) Prof. Bob Wishitemi who represented the Vice Chancellor, Moi University Prof. Richard K. Mibey.
