Ultra modern Margaret Thatcher Library at Moi University

Moi University welcomes International students who satisfy the minimum requirements for admission into its diversified academic programmes ranging from short customised international courses to postgraduate programmes in basic and natural sciences, technology, health sciences, education, development and social sciences. The academic programmes include the following:

  • Customised International short courses (Duration 1-6 weeks, tailored according to the academic needs of participants)
  • International short courses (Duration 1-6 weeks; designed by Moi University to provide competence in an academic area of interest e.g. Environmental Impact Assessment, Wetlands Management, Bushmanship, etc)
  • Certificate course programmes (duration 2-3 weeks)
  • Bridging course programmes (duration 3 months)
  • Diploma course programme (duration 1 year)
  • Study abroad programmes (studies for a semester or an academic year for none credit transfer or credit transfer)
  • Regular Degree programmes (undergraduate and postgraduate) (Duration 4-6 years, partially government-sponsored)
  • Privately student/self sponsored programmes (undergraduate and postgraduate) (PSSP) (Duration 4-6 years)

All courses are taught in English. Candidates who have not studied in English before must provide evidence of proficiency in English. They may be required to enrol, at a fee, for the English bridging course offered by Moi University to upgrade their standard of English.

Prospective students are advised to consult the Moi University calendar for detailed information that they may require on various academic programmes. They may also seek for further information from the Chief Academic Officer or Director, International Programmes or Dean of the relevant Faculty in which they wish to enrol, P.O. Box 3900, ELDORET, KENYA.

Preamble

The occasional studentship programme is intended for international students wishing to spend part of their university time at Moi University to pursue studies to fulfil their academic interests on a short-term basis. They may be enrolled to pursue studies in the under-listed programmes:

  • Customised international courses
  • International short courses
  • Study abroad programme for international students.

Admission requirements

Applicants under the programme must fulfil the following:

  • Be students of other recognised institutions of high learning (colleges and universities)
  • Must have completed one year at their home college/university if undergraduates.

Application procedures, programme duration and registration

  • Intending candidates should apply through relevant offices of their institutions
  • Candidates under the programme must register at least for one week and for not more than one academic year
  • Candidates may apply for registration at any time and could be admitted at the beginning of any semester/term of the academic year or any other scheduled period
  • Candidates are at liberty to take part of or the whole of the courses offered per term/semester if they have fully paid for them
  • Candidates may audit, at an additional fee, any course at the University during their stay at Moi University.

Examinations, credit transfers and awards

  • Candidates under this programme shall not receive any award from the University, unless otherwise decided by Senate
  • Departments are at liberty to assess the academic performance of candidates and make results available on request
  • A candidate whose stay at the university is one term/semester or one academic year may on request be permitted to sit University examinations to facilitate credit transfer provided that full examination fees are paid.

Certificate courses, Bridging Courses and Diploma courses

Preamble

International students are welcome for admission into Certificate, Bridging and Diploma courses offered by Moi University to fulfil their academic pursuit. The courses, which are announced from time to time, may commence any time of the year.

Admission Requirements

a) Certificate courses:

Minimum grade of D+ (Plus) at KCSE or equivalent.

b) Bridging courses:

Minimum grade of D+ (Plus) obtained at KCSE in the subject to be bridged OR its Equivalent

a) Diploma Programmes:

i) For Postgraduate Diploma Programmes

Holders of degree qualification with background knowledge in the relevant field.

ii) For non-postgraduate Diploma Programmes:

Holders of a minimum grade of C at KCSE or its Equivalent.

Application Procedure and Programme duration

a) Intending candidates should apply to the Chief Academic Officer or Director, International Programmes, P.O. Box 3900 ELDORET or Dean of the relevant Faculty once a course in which they are interested has been announced.

b) Programme duration

  • Certificate courses: 3 months
  • Bridging courses: 3 weeks
  • Diploma courses: 1-2 years
  • Degree courses: 4-6 years

Examinations Regulations

  • Candidates under this programme are required to fully adhere to examination regulations approved for the course in which they are admitted.
  • Candidates shall receive designated awards in the course they have pursued on its satisfactory completion.

Preamble

Moi University offers both regular and privately sponsored students Programmes (PSSP) at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. International students are welcome for admission into the programmes provided that they satisfy the minimum requirements for admission. Degree Programmes are offered in Education; Health Sciences; Information Sciences; Law; Technology; Agriculture; Forest Resources and Wildlife Management; Science; Social Cultural and Development Studies; Environmental Studies and Public Health (Graduate Studies only); and Business and Management

The entrance requirement self below must be regarded as MINIMUM requirements, which in no way entitle the applicant to a place in the University

In addition, candidates will be required to fulfil specific admission requirements of the Departments/Faculties into which they seek admission.

Minimum Entrance requirements for undergraduate Degree Programmes

  • A Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education with an aggregate minimum of C+ OR its equivalent
  • Must meet the criteria for admission through mature Age Scheme of Moi University.

Minimum Entrance requirements for postgraduate Degree Programmes a) Master of Philosophy/Master of Science Programmes

  • Holders of first class or upper second class or lower second class of Moi University OR
  • Holders of equivalent qualifications from accredited universities and recognised by Moi University as equivalent to its qualification.
b) Doctor of Philosophy Programmes
  • Holders of a Master's degree of Moi University OR
  • Holders of a master's of any other recognised University OR
  • Holders of other qualifications considered by Moi University Senate as equivalent to a Master's degree.

International students are expected to adhere to University Rules and Regulations with which they must make themselves familiar at once on arrival.

  1. The University charges a fee of US$40 for undergraduate and US$50 for postgraduate application fees.
  2. The tuition fees charged per term/semester/course should be paid in full before the student is registered.
  3. The University charges fees for all categories of international students at PSSP rates, with a loading of up to 20% depending on the category of the student (see d below)
  4. For the purpose of fee payment, international students are classified as below:
  • An International Student is a student who is not a national or a permanent resident of Kenya. Such a student is required to pay international fees at the rate of 20% over local PSSP fees.
  • International students who are citizens of East African Countries (Uganda and Tanzania) are eligible to pay local fees at Privately sponsored Student Programme (PSSP) rates.
  • Refugees and asylum seekers are treated as international students but are eligible to pay local fees at Privately Sponsored Student Programme (PSSP) rates.
  • Occasional International Students are registered international students attending courses for non-degree purposes. They are required to pay international fees for the term/semester in which are enrolled.
  • International Affiliates are visiting international students and staff not registered for any courses but are attached/affiliated to Moi University whilst pursuing their own research or studies to fulfil their academic interest. They are required to pay fees at the rate of US$100 per person per month or US$1200 per person per year.

Exchange International students are required to pay fees provided for in signed Memoranda of understanding governing such exchanges.
