ISO 9001:2008 CERTIFICATION |
Moi University is now ISO 9001:2008 Certified. The University received it's certification on 9th December 2009 from the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) which is Kenya's leading ISO standards certification body.
The ISO 9001:2008 Certificate was presented to Moi University Chancellor Prof. B. Ogot by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) MD Eng. Joel Kioko at a launching ceremony held at Moi University. Eng. Kioko praised the university on the landmark achievement as it joins other world universities who are already ISO Certified. The university received the certification at the time it's celebrating 25 years of Education, Service and Technology.
MOI UNIVERSITY’S LONG JOURNEY TOWARDS ISO 9001:2008 CERTIFICATION |
The idea of adopting ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management Systems by Moi University was brought into focus during the preparation of the University’s 2005-2015 Strategic Plan. The University’s Strategic Issue number 7 in the Strategic Plan concerning Quality Management envisions the creation, development and implementation of a quality management system that helps in the achievement of the University’s mission, vision and objectives.
From September 2007, the University engaged officers from Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) who carried out a rigorous training of staff on ISO 9001:2008 quality management systems up to April 2009. The trainings were conducted for Members of Senior Management, Deans and Directors, Heads of Academic and Administrative Divisions, and all other cadres of university staff. In the intervening period, several awareness campaigns targeting all staff have been done continuously.
The management appointed a Management Representative and ISO Champions drawn from all the departments and sections of the university to spearhead the relevant processes with the view to having the university comply with the requisite processes for certification.
The MR later appointed 49 members of staff who were trained by the KEBS officers as Internal Quality Auditors, this being a prelude to the next stage that was to involve implementation of Quality Management Systems. All the departments and units were required to produce their own records of evidence for conformity with their own procedures. In the meantime, the MR continued to periodically conduct reviews of QMS to ensure that it was in conformity with the standards.
By October 2009, the University management was sufficiently convinced and satisfied that the university was ready for external audit by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), after the successful conclusion of the internal audit, and subsequent correction of a few nonconformities. KEBS was then subsequently asked to send their auditors to undertake the third party certification audit.
The external certification audit was conducted in the entire university, including its campuses in November 2009, followed by the requisite corrections and corrective actions. Duly convinced that Moi University had satisfied all the requirements for certification, the Kenya Bureau of Standards has now awarded the University ISO 9001:2008 certification.
While we celebrate this achievement, with a measure of humility, I wish to pay glowing tribute to our Chancellor, Members of Council, the Vice Chancellor and Members of Management, and indeed all the staff of Moi University in all our campuses for making this happen!
