MOI TEACHING AND REFERRAL HOSPITAL
INTRODUCTION

Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital is located in Uasin Gishu District of Rift Valley Province. The Hospital started as a Cottage Hospital in the early 1920’s with a bed capacity of 60 and a few members of staff. It developed over the years to become a fully fledged District Hospital, offering a range of both in-patient and out patient health services.

The Hospital is on approximately 100 acres of land, which it has utilised less than half of it.

The hospital had a major expansion in 1973, when the bed capacity was increased to 180. In 1986, another 144 beds were added with the completion of the construction of the Nyayo wards. Alongside the development of the inpatient facilities were the development of diagnostic and other supportive facilities which include: The laboratory,

X-ray, Theatre, Pharmacy , Eye Unit, Dental, Maintenance Unit, Mortuary, laundry, kitchen, stores among others.

The establishment of Moi University in 1984 and the subsequent establishment of the Faculty of Health Sciences opened a new chapter in the development of the District Hospital. The hospital had to be expanded and upgraded in order to provide teaching facilities for the College of Health Science, Moi University, Baraton University, Kenya Medical Training Colleges and other similar institutions.

The phase I of this development included the construction of a two storey building, which comprises the out patient department, with associated diagnostic facilities e.g. Lecture rooms, offices etc. for the Faculty of Health Sciences and , Central sterilisation supplies department (CSSD).

In 1998 Friends of the Faculty of Health Sciences put up four operating theatres on "harambee" basis (self-help).

The hospital strives to provide quality health care to the Kenyan public. For it to achieve this objective it will require facilities that will enhance high quality research, efficient, and effective health care delivery, diagnostics, management and rehabilitation of patients. This objective forms the basis for the mission and vision of the hospital as stated hereafter.
