Mr. Evans Mwai,
Chairman, Moi University Council
The Moi University Act gives the University the mandate to carry out research. Article 4(c) of the Act specifies that one of the major functions of the University is the "development and transmission of knowledge and skills through research". Pursuant to this provision, Statute 12(e) of Moi University empowers Council to promote and make financial provisions to create facilities for a global centre of research excellence within the University.
In order to achieve this, the University Council, through the University Research Policy enables its staff and students to make full use of its meagre resources to create a "research culture" consistent with the National Development and the Millenium Development Goals.
Both the Vision and Mission of Moi University, as per the Ten-year Strategic Plan (2005/2015) embraces research and extension as the core activities of the University. The 2nd Annual International Conference as a forum for academic discourse generates and disseminates the research findings from the various disciplines and scholars from diverse backgrounds with the primary objective of improving humanity. It is also my sincere hope that the patenting of the research output is put in place in order for the varsity to reap full benefits from research.
I am proud to note that Moi University is the first University in Kenya to develop Research and Intellectual Property Rights Policies.
I would like to thank all those who participated in preparing this conference and ensuring its success.
Thank you.
MR. EVANS MWAI
CHAIRMAN, MOI UNIVERSITY COUNCIL
