2nd ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE - MESSAGE FROM THE CHANCELLOR

Professor Bethwell Allan Ogot,
Chancellor, Moi University

Moi University was established in 1984 by an Act of Parliament as the second public university in Kenya. Twenty years after its inception, the University now operates in four Campuses, namely Main Campus, Chepkoilel Campus, Town Campus, and Eldoret West Campus.

The students enrolment has grown from the first batch of 83 students in 1984 to 14,855 in 2005/06 Academic Year. Between 1984 and 2004, the number of staff at all levels has increased from 143 in 1984 to over 2,700 in 2006 of whom 800 are academic staff.

The Moi University 10 year Strategic Plan (2005-2015) provides that the University strives to achieve excellence in academic, research and extension programmes. This has culminated into the Annual Development International Conferences, the first one held last year. The hosting of this 2nd International Conference whose theme is "Science and Socio-economic for Sustainable Development - Challenges and Opportunities in the 21st Century" could not have come at a better time than this.

This conference will act as a forum for exchange of ideas by international scholars from various universities and other research institutions. The University will greatly gain from this exchange of ideas. The output from the deliberations will be published in journals for Schools to be archived for academic purposes. The University will have put another foot forward to international recognition as research is one of the core businesses of the University, apart from teaching.

The University has other 150 international academic, industrial linkages and exchange programs which have placed the University at the cutting edge of knowledge creation and application. A fine example is the Academic Model for the Prevention and Treatment of HIV/AIDS (AMPATH) centre which is a complete teaching, research and treatment centre, community-based services (COBES) and problem based teaching techniques.

As Chancellor of Moi University, may I take this opportunity to commend the University Management and the Organizing Committee for planning and ensuring the success of the Moi University 2nd Annual International Conference. Thank you.
