Academicians, Gender Activists, Politicians, Community Based Organization (CBO's) and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO's) occasionally engage in activities that are meant to sensitize people against all forms of gender-based violence and discrimination. Since the 1990's these activities have culminated in annual international celebrations on the "16 days of Activism Against Gender Violence on Women" which fall between 25th November and 10th December. A Symposium has been planned by Moi University, the North Rift Women's Organizations' Network, (NORWON) and the Netherlands Development Organization SNV - Kenya North Rift Portfolio, together with local leaders, is set to take place between the 5th to 9th December 2005 at Moi University, Chepkoilel Campus, Eldoret, Kenya.

The symposium will consist of the following activities:

The theme of the symposium is: "Eliminating Gender Violence and Conflict; Building synergy between the academia, leaders and the community"

Paper presentations will be on the following sub-themes:

  1. Dimensions of gender based violence
  2. Impact of conflict on women and children
  3. Gender dimensions of poverty and HIV/AIDS; portraying a feminine face
  4. Human rights, culture and change
  5. Women empowerment, participation in management and community leadership: Opportunities and possibilities
  6. Impact of cultural practices on health and education: a gender perspective
  7. Ethnic-based conflicts and their effects on education, access to natural resource and management
  8. Peace building for development and progress in pastoralist and agricultural communities
  9. Fundraising: Opportunities for resource mobilization
  10. Maintaining a vibrant women's regional movement.

Registration and Cost of the Symposium
International Pparticipants - 50 US Dollars
Local Participants - 20 US Dollars

All participants will meet the cost of their stay while at the symposium. A subsidized cost will be made for excursions for those who will be interested.

Abstracts should reach the coordinator of the Paper Presentation Committee, Prof. Peter Ndege, not later than 28th October 2005. Final papers should be received not later than 10th November 2005 addressed to:
