PSSP

Dr. Dorothy Rotich
Director, PSSP

Privately Sponsored Students Programme (PSSP) was launched in October 1998. It is an educational service by Moi University through which any Kenyan is able to pursue university education at an affordable rate compared to the cost of similar studies abroad. The programme aims at providing opportunities to secondary school graduates who obtain a minimum grade of C+ at the Kenya Certificate of Secondary School (KCSE) but are not admitted by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services because of the limited capacities into public universities. The attendant effect of this is that only about 10, 000 students are offered admission while many other members of the public who would like to further their education have been given an opportunity through this programme. The programme provides many opportunities to thousands of Kenyans to study locally thus enabling the country save a lot of money in foreign currency to foreign universities.

Centres of Excellence

Africa Center of Excellence II in Phytochemicals, Textile and Renewal Energy (ACEII PTRE)

aceii logosThe manufacturing sector is considered to be contributing only 10% of Kenyan Gross Domestic Product. However, the sector is projected to play a critical role in the economic growth of the country, where, an annual growth rate of 10% is envisaged under Kenya Vision 2030.

This achievement would require an increase in highly skilled personnel in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) to facilitate manufacture of skill-intensive products of high value and quality. However, inadequacy in personnel with advanced training in textiles, phytochemicals and renewable energy fields has been confirmed. Furthermore, it is identified in the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation 2014-2018 Strategic Plan as being one of the contributing factors hindering fast industrialization of Kenya. This scenario is not unique to Kenya, but it is a regional trend with similar shortage in skilled manpower reported in all Eastern and Southern Africa countries.
To address the shortage, the Center will support the training of postgraduate students to work in textile related industries, research institutes, and education sector locally and in the region.

African Cluster Centre (Moi-ACC)

ACC ogoThe Moi University African Cluster Centre (Moi–ACC) is housed in the Moi University ICDC complex, with members drawn from School of Arts and Social Sciences (SASS) whose overriding objectives are to offer interdisciplinary teaching and research in the broad field of African studies and to act as the center where all other Africa–focused scholarship in Moi University coalesce. Within the context of these objectives, and building on the very strong tradition of exploring and interrogating diverse ways of knowing Africa that has developed in SASS in the three and a half decades of its existence, the Moi–ACC is envisioned as a hub of outstanding inter–, multi– and transdiciplinary research and conversations that will contribute to the greater understanding of Africa in ways that enable the addressing of significant issues affecting the continent. For more details, please click here to visit Moi-ACC Website
