  • Location and History

Moi University Odera Akang’o Campus College is located in Yala town, Siaya County. It is 150 kilometres away from the seat of Moi University at Eldoret and 45 kilometres from the third largest town in Kenya, Kisumu, on the Kisumu–Busia Road. It occupies 2.6 hectares of land on facilities that were donated by the family of the renowned historian Prof. Bethwell Allan Ogot, who is a former Chancellor of Moi University.
The campus, which was started as a Teaching Centre in 2008 and elevated just under three years later to a Campus College, is named after an early twentieth Century Ruoth – “Chief”, for want of a better term – of what at the time was the Luo-speaking Gem nation. (Gem is today considered a clan in a much larger Luo nation.) The headquarters of the Ruoth was in Yala. A century after his tumultuous career as an administrator came to an ignoble end; Odera Akang’o is best remembered for his passionate embrace of Western-style formal education. Stories are told about the no-nonsense Ruoth caning and even jailing subjects into taking their children to school. The results of Odera Akang’o’s enthusiasm for Western-style schooling are indicated by common sayings like “When in Yala throw a stone in any direction; it will fall in the compound of a university professor.”
It is, indeed, befitting that a university professor whose home is the proverbial stone’s throw away from the centre of Yala town made possible the establishment of a university campus that is named after this remarkable personage who, long before others in his generation, saw that the ideas of Progress and Development are written into the concept of the institution of the school.
Moi University Odera Akang’o Campus College lives up to the legacy of Ruoth Odera Akang’o by providing quality education that nurtures talent and inspires innovation. Through clubs and events like public lectures the students are exposed to co–curricular activities that complement what they learn in class and encourage their development as well–rounded, responsible and progressive individuals.
