Senate sends 3 nominees for Chancellorship to Education CS

Chancellorship election1The Senate has forwarded names of three nominees for the position of Chancellor of Moi University to the Education Cabinet Secretary for onward transmission to the President to appoint one among them to head the Institution.

The position of the Chancellor fell vacant on September 13, 2018 following the expiry of a five-year term of Prof. Miriam K. Were who served the University since September 2013.

The Moi University Alumni Association members on Friday November 30, 2018 conducted an election at main Campus to rank five nominees that had been shortlisted by the joint Committee of Senate and the Alumni Association.

The five nominees who were shortlisted for ranking were Dr. Peter Munga, Dr. Julius Kipng’etich, Prof. Ratemo Michieka, Prof. Miriam Were and Dr. Edward Rege.

From the exercise, Dr. Munga was ranked highest with a weighted average of 245 votes, followed by Dr. Kipng’etich with 188 votes, Dr. Rege with 144 votes, Prof. Ratemo with 135 votes and Prof. Were with 118 votes.

Therefore the top three ranked nominees were Dr. Munga, Dr. Kipng’etich and Dr. Rege. But after the exercise, Dr. Kipng’etich who emerged second, declined to have his name forwarded by Senate to the Cabinet Secretary, hence Prof. Ratemo who had initially been ranked in fourth position, assumed position three, to close the list of the top three candidates.

Hence, the Special Senate Sitting held on Tuesday December 4, 2018 forwarded three names of Prof. Munga, Dr. Rege and Prof. Ratemo to the Education Cabinet Secretary, Amb. (Dr.) Amina Mohamed.

Moi University looks forward to the eventual appointment of the Chancellor from the three candidates to preside over the forthcoming 37th Graduation Ceremony slated for Thursday December 20, 2018. The Graduation Ceremony will also see the inauguration of the new Chancellor.

The Chancellor is appointed for a five-year term and can only be renewed once.
