Moi University becomes AEE Accredited Trainer for Renewable Energy Professional Certification Program (REP)

moi university administration buildingMoi University has been approved by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) in USA, Energy Training Foundation (EnTF) in South Africa and the Association of Energy Professionals – Eastern Africa (AEPEA) as a training provider for Renewable Energy Professionals (REP) for entire Eastern Africa including Ethiopia and Sudan for international certification program. The certification is provided by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), USA. The REP program is designed to recognize the expertise and experience of professionals involved in the specification and application of renewable and alternative energy technologies, assessment of renewable energy projects and development of achievable low carbon and sustainability goals for organizations. This will be the first time the course is held in Kenya. Currently, the country has only 6 REP professionals. The course duration is 5 days with additional 4 hours of voluntary examination at a course fee of Ksh. 160,000.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has already been signed between Moi University and AEPEA for collaborations in Joint research, joint trainings for short courses, staff exchange to promote academia-industry link and joint workshops and seminars. The first REP course at Moi University will be conducted from 26th to 30th October 2019 followed by examination on 31st October 2019. Obtaining REP certification requires one to pass an examination and possess work experience in addition to basic skills in Engineering, Thermodynamics and Energy management.

Eng. Prof. Augustine Makokha has been coordinating the activities between ACEII-PTRE and AEPEA for Moi University. He is a certified energy manager (CEM), a certified renewable energy professional (REP), a registered professional engineer with Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) and corporate member of the institution of engineers of Kenya (IEK). He is also the head of Department of Energy Engineering and chairman of the coordinating committee for income generating units (IGUs) in the School of Engineering. Prof. Makokha is actively involved in research, energy consultancy projects and training of MSc and PhD students in Energy Studies at Moi University.
