Prof. Barbara Moser-Moser, a visiting Professor at the University of Nairobi paid a courtesy call to the Vice-Chancellor, Moi University on Tuesday 21st June 2022. Professor Barbara is the Coordinated of the African Higher Education in emergencies Network (AHEEN) currently hosted at the University of Nairobi. During the Visit Prof. Barbara briefed the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Sanga Kosgey on the Network activities and plans for enhancing support for Education in Emergencies.
The Network was conceptualized in 2020, which was initially known as African Universities Network for Higher Education in Emergencies (AUN4HEiE). The network comprised of four Universities - Moi University, University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, Stellenbosch University (South Africa) and three non-Governmental organizations - Women Educational Researchers of Kenya (WERK), Youth Educational and Sports (YES), African Digital University Network. Recently (2022) the network has expanded to incorporate Windle International and Dadaab Response Association (DRA). In the Network, Moi University offers a Diploma in Entrepreneurship programme for refugee students from Kakuma Refugee camp. The project is currently supported by a grant from the Open Society Foundation (OSF) and the Diploma students are awarded tuition scholarships. The first cohort is now undertaking the second-semester exams with the program ending in January 2023. A second intake of new students is underway. YES offers student support in the refugee camps while ADUN offers Digital capacity building for the facilitators. Prof. Barbara was accompanied by Prof Charles Lagat, Director IPLA and Dr. Ester Njeri, who is the Network Steering Committee Member. Each institution has a member in the steering committee which is the governing body of the Network. The network has 11 members of the advisory board who are from the government sector, non-governmental organizations, and private sector both nationally and internationally.
