Moi University scoops Eldoret ASK accolades

Moi University has for the umpteenth time proved to be a force to reckon in matters innovation and technology after it scooped coveted accolades at the Eldoret National Agriculture Society of Kenya (ASK) Show.

Kenya’s second public university emerged tops in the categories of the best manufacturers and distribution of telecommunication devices, equipment and services providers and the best stand embracing information technology and communication system. “Scooping the two crucial prizes is testimony enough to tell the country and the continent that we are the leading University in innovation and technology. It proves that Moi University is true to its billing as the foundation of knowledge,” said Dr. Dorothy Rotich, PSSP Director and co-chair of Moi University’s ASK organizing committee. Dr. Rotich highlighted the need for universities to venture into innovation and technology to enable grow the country’s economy, noting that Moi University is already at the vanguard of embracing the Government’s big four agenda of manufacturing, universal healthcare, affordable housing and food security. She attributed the stellar performance to resilience and commitment by the staff and students in showcasing the best innovations and programmes of Moi University.

The institution is renowned for winning the Digital Literacy Programme (DLP) to manufacture and distribute laptops and tablets to primary schools in 26 counties across the country. The DLP programme (popularly known as laptop project) is Jubilee Government’s flagship project in digitizing teaching and learning in primary schools. The University manufactures the telecommunication devices at its state-of-the-art plant situated at Rivatex East Africa Limited in Eldoret town. Rivatex is a textile plant wholly owned by Moi University. It is a research, product development, extension and production facility whose purpose is to enhance the capacity of training more students on industrial technique and to facilitate industrial research for students and staff.

Moi University is also the Africa Centre of Excellence in Phytochemicals, Textiles and Renewable Energy (ACEII-PTRE), a five-year World Bank-funded project to a tune of Ksh600m.

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mr. Mwangi Kiunjuri, who is an alumnus of Moi University, hailed his alma mater for steering innovation and technology, reiterating the need for education that is focused on solving the society’s problems rather than being merely theoretical. Speaking during his tour to the Moi University stand when he officially opened the show on Friday March 9, 2018, Mr. Kiunjuri who graduated from the University in 1994 with a degree in Education, expressed his commitment to support Moi University Alumni Association’s (MUAA) activities. He pledged to attend the forthcoming Moi University Alumni dinner scheduled for Friday March 16, 2018 at Simba Auditorium, Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) in Nairobi. KICD Director, Dr. Julius O. Jwan is also an alumnus of Moi University. He graduated from Moi University with a B.Ed Arts degree in 1990 and MPhil in Linguistics in 1996.
